Although p53 is activated by γ-irradiation and DNA-damaging drugs, both of these treatments can induce apoptosis in the absence of p53.

p53 has been shown to inhibit FAS (Parrales and Iwakuma, 2016). For example, p53 can negatively regulate transcription of SREBP-1c to inhibit FAS (Yahagi et al., 2003).

Anticancer drugs can sensitize cancer cells to the FAS agonist by activating p53, which in turn promotes the expression of the FAS receptor and probably other pro-apoptotic proteins.
