Ventnor (/ ˈvɛntnər /) is a seaside resort town and civil parish established in the Victorian era on the southeast coast of the Isle of Wight, England, 11 miles (18 km) from Newport. It is situated south of St Boniface Down, and built on steep slopes leading down to the sea.

Isle of Wight Nostalgia - Ventnor's lost Railways - INVECTIS
Ventnor survived until 1966 when it was closed by Dr. Beeching's axe! The passenger line closed on 18th April that year while freight survived a month longer, closing on 16th May. The latest maps show both sites now re-developed as can be seen from the pictures below.

The area that Ventnor town now occupies back then comprised around 330 acres of farmland, accessible from the rest of the Island only by a couple of rough cart tracks.
