Bacup emerged as a settlement following the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain in the Early Middle Ages. For centuries, it was a small and obscure centre of domestic flannel and woollen cloth production, and many of the original weavers' cottages survive today as listed buildings.

In 2018, we celebrated 140 years of being a society having been established in 1878. To mark this occasion we invite you to share with us your photographs, memories and knowledge of Old Bacup and Stacksteads, thereby creating an archive of this amazing town's history and people.

Bacup. Bacup is one of the oldest settlements in the Rossendale Valley near the border with West Yorkshire. It is 14 miles north of Manchester and 22 miles east of Preston. It is the highest town in East Lancashire at 250m above sea level.
