Noakhali District (Bengali: নোয়াখালী জেলা), historically known as Bhulua[3] (Bengali: ভুলুয়া), is a district in southeastern Bangladesh, located in Chattogram Division. [4][5] It was established as a district in 1821, and officially named Noakhali in 1868.

Noakhali is a district under the supervision of Chittagong Division. The district is bounded by the Comilla district to the north, the Meghna estuary and the Bay of Bengal to the south, Feni and Chittagong districts to the east and Lakshmipur and Bhola districts to the west.

Noakhali District shares borders with Feni district to the East side, Lakshmipur district to the West side, Cumilla district to the North side, and Noakhali River to the South side. Noakhali district consists of 9 Upazilas, 8 Municipalities (Pourashava), 91 Union Parishads and 978 Villages.

Noakhali District (chittagong division) area 3685.87 sq km, located in between 22°07' and 23°08' north latitudes and in between 90°53' and 91°27' east longitudes.

The Noakhali District was established in 1868 as a renaming of the Bhulua district, which the British founded on 29 March 1822. It headquarters was in the town of Noakhali until the town vanished in the river-bed in 1951, as a result of the Meghna River erosion.
