Chester William "Chet" Nimitz Jr. (February 17, 1915 – January 2, 2002) was an American submarine commander in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War, and a businessman. He was awarded the Navy Cross and three Silver Stars for valor in battle.

In June 1939, Nimitz, now rear admiral, was appointed Chief of the Bureau of Navigation. He chafed a little at the confinement of desk and office, but worked off his excess energy by frequently walking home several miles after work with his good friend Captain Willis A. Lee.

By December 7, 1941, Chester Nimitz was a Rear Admiral and the Chief of the Bureau of Navigation. After the attack on Pearl Harbor and the chaos of the following days, President Franklin Roosevelt relieved Admiral Husband Kimmel as the Commander and Chief of the Pacific Fleet and selected Nimitz to replace him.

Admiral Chester W. Nimitz looms large in the story of the U.S. Navy in World War II. He passed away in 1966 — sadly, just three years before the launching of the U.S. Naval Institute Oral History Program.

In 1938, Nimitz became a Rear Admiral. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Nimitz became Commander-in-Chief, United States Pacific Fleet; in 1942 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Ocean Area.

In that role, he commanded all land and sea forces in the central Pacific area. Nimitz was responsible for the victories at Midway and Okinawa among others.
