The D40 is a very capable camera to learn on. If you had to pick between buy a new body or buying new glass, I would recommend investing in good glass. In theory, a good lens will last you years/decades.

Oct 28, 2021 · AF and AF-D = old school mechanical AF. The D40 does not have a built in AF motor to drive these lenses so avoid. AF-S = AF motor built into the lens. These are what you want on your D40 AF-P = stepper motor in the lens. Your D40's AF system cannot communicate with these lenses so avoid Aperture type:

So I dug out my old Nikon D40. I stopped using it because the Autofocus was really finicky and sometimes didn't work. I had attempted to get it repaired but they weren't able to fix it, so I shelved it. Then camera phones took over and my Nikon D40 was left in the wardrobe. I dug it out a few weeks ago and the battery was well and truly dead.
