The New York City Fire Department has literally dozens of special units, ranging from Haz-Mat apparatus to hydrant thawing units.

The borough of Manhattan is home to 43 Engine Companies, 32 Truck Companies, 1 Squad Company and 1 Rescue Company quartered in 49 Firehouses. They protect a population of approximately 1.5 million residents over an area of 23 square miles.

The Borough of the Bronx is home to 30 Engine Companies, 27 Truck Companies, 2 Squad Companies, and 1 Rescue Company quartered in 33 Firehouses (technically they are in 36 Firehouses-6 Firehouses in the borough are conjoined with another).

The borough of Staten Island is home to 18 Engine Companies, 12 Truck Companies and 1 Rescue Company quartered in 19 Firehouses. Staten Island companies protect a population of approximately 443,000 residents, over an area of 60 square miles.

The Borough of Brooklyn is home to 65 Engine Companies, 39 Truck Companies, 2 Squad Companies and 1 Rescue Company quartered in 69 Firehouses. They protect approximately 2.5 Million residents over an 81 square mile area.

The borough of Queens is home to 49 Engine Companies, 32 Truck Companies, 2 Squad Companies, and 1 Rescue Company quartered in 48 Firehouses(Queens is the only borough to have a permanent "double engine" house). They protect a population of 2.2 million residents over an area of 112 square miles.
