The R2 circulation coins that came before showcased ‘Children’s Rights’, ‘Right to Education’, ‘Environmental Rights’ and ‘Freedom of Movement and Residence’. A circulation coin with a face value of R5 will be launched later this month.

A variety of designs of South Africa’s national animal, the springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis), have appeared on South African coinage. The newest rendition of this antelope features on this fourth edition of the R2 coin. The coin depicts a female springbok with her offspring in front of a mountainous landscape.

The new circulation coins, together with a range of collectable coins launched last month, commemorate 25 years of democracy in South Africa. Governor Lesetja Kganyago unveiled the designs of the new circulation coins, which include five new R2 coins and a new R5 coin.
