Native Art. Pre-Columbian art thrived over a wide timescale, from 1800 BC to AD 1500. Despite the great range and variety of artwork, certain characteristics were repeated throughout the region, namely a preference for angular, linear patterns, and three-dimensional ceramics.

We have focused on acquiring modern and contemporary Native art to complement our superlative early works. Our collection now includes hundreds of late 20th- and 21st-century works of Native art, including new media installations, fashion, photography, textiles, paintings and works on paper.

Indigenous American visual arts include portable arts, such as painting, basketry, textiles, or photography, as well as monumental works, such as architecture, land art, public sculpture, or murals. Some Indigenous art forms coincide with Western art forms; however, some, such as porcupine quillwork or birchbark biting are unique to the Americas.

American Indigenous artists were some of the earliest to create art in the history of the world, including pottery, cave paintings, carvings, and fiber designs that date back to prehistoric times.
