Is the Naruto running style just there for easier animation?
No, it's used in the manga too. It's a stereotypical ninja running style in manga and anime, used to convey speed. Goku even used to run in a similar way in early Dragon Ball. It being easier to animate run cycles for is just a secondary benefit.

This is me second walk/run cycle I did. I was inspired by the cartoon called "Naruto". After making my first walk cycle, this cycle was fairly easier. I laid out my Key Frames and then just added in my in-betweens. I worked on keeping my figure on model and my lines clean.
