Jul 11, 2023 · MUNCIE, Ind. — Nickle Plate Road SD9 No. 358 is nearing the end of a lengthy process of restoration to operation by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, with Progress Rail returning the locomotive to its appearance as built in 1957.

The 358 is the only operational Nickel Plate SD9 to look as it did when new and the only one to operate in rail tourism service. The 358 entered service after additional mechanical and electrical work in late mid-2024.

Jul 11, 2023 · Designated as “Special Duty” locomotives, the SD9-type locomotive helped end the era of steam power thanks to their reduced maintenance costs. The 358 went on to serve Norfolk & Western and Norfolk Southern for decades before it was retired.

Six axle power on a shortline, this former NKP SD-9 has been rebuilt by Horizon Rail and leased to the AC&J of Jefferson, OH. Seen tied down for the evening across the street from the old Jefferson passenger depot.
