NKP 763 was delivered to the road by Lima on 9-1-44, and retired in August, 1960. She went to Roanoke in July of '66. IIRC, she had a major overhaul in the late Summer or Fall of '57, and was pulled from service in the Spring of '58, when leased C&O Geeps arrived.

Mar 21, 2025 · While 763 has had her rusted jacketing removed, has been cleaned up and had the headlight and mars lamp reattached, there's nothing suggesting that she just needs a "year to get done" I would be interested if anyone here has any concrete info regarding 763's condition and if there are any plans for an eventual return to steam.

I am very excited. I hope that the insurance goons let up and allow him to get his whole stable running. Any other info would be appreciated. -Joe

Apr 9, 2025 · The damaged and repaired fins are not a serious issue, and I could certainly see where and how, for example, a damaged whistle that was left on or traded out by NKP for the 763 before preservation could have been swapped for an identical, intact whistle later and the damaged whistle repaired.

Mar 31, 2025 · Regarding 763's sale, I view it as a very positive development for VMT. While it is a good representative of a design that saw considerable use in Virginia, it's preservation in Roanoke was a result of the 1964 N&W/Wabash/NKP merger. 2700 or one of the other existing C&O 2-8-4's would be much more appropriate to the collection.
