The PRR E44 was an electric, rectifier-equipped locomotive built by General Electric for the Pennsylvania Railroad between 1960 and 1963. The PRR used them for freight service on the Northeast Corridor .

Apr 16, 2025 · NJ Transit had eight E44s, numbered 4458 through 4465; the numbers were unaltered from PRR days. NJT never used them. Apparently they were too tall for the tunnels under the Hudson River. They all got sold to Amtrak in 1986.

The E44 was the last mass-produced successful locomotive purchased by a for-profit railroad. Other than that, all you've got is the NJT/AMTK/SEPTA juice jacks, and the niche market stuff out west. I don't count the E60, because that's got quite a few buyers it was a dud.
