"Mors Ab Alto" is Latin and translates to "Death from above." The 7th Bomb Group traces its history to that of the 1st Army Observation Group during World War I; activated on 6 September 1918. The mission of the group required day and night reconnaissance, photo reconnaissance, command reconnaissance, and artillery adjustment.

Activated in 1921, it inherited the lineage of the 1st Army Observation Group, which was established and organized, on 6 September 1918. The 7th Bombardment Group was deploying to the Philippines when the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941.
