Moritz Kaposi (Hungarian: Kaposi Mór, pronounced [ˈkɒpoʃi ˈmoːr]; 23 October 1837 – 6 March 1902) was a physician and dermatologist from the Austro-Hungarian Empire who discovered the skin tumor that received his name (Kaposi's sarcoma).

Moritz Kaposi, also known as Moriz Kohn, was a distinguished professor of dermatology at the University of Vienna. His name has become familiar in recent years because Kaposi's sarcoma, a disease characterized by multiple bluish nodules of the skin that he described in 1872, is one of the signs of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Moriz (Moritz, Moric, Moricz) Kaposi, whose original sur name was Kohn, was born in Kaposvar, Hungary on October 23, 1837, the son of poor parents. His early education was obtained in Pressburg, Bratislava, and in 1861 he received the M.D. degree at the University of Vienna.

Kaposi was highly regarded as a teacher, a multilingual speaker and international lecturer. In 1872, he described 5 male patients with skin lesions involving the feet, which he initially described as ‘idiopathic multiple pigmented sarcoma of the skin.’

More than a century after Kaposi’s initial description, the emergence of this skin cancer in young homosexual men showed its association with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/AIDS. Kaposi sarcoma is now a key diagnostic marker for HIV infection and AIDS.
