Monywa is the largest city in Sagaing Region, Myanmar. It is located 136 km north-west of Mandalay city, on the eastern bank of the Chindwin River. Monywa serves as a major trade center for India and Burma through Kalay Myo road and Chindwin river.

Monywa is known as a centre for poets, often described as the poetic centre of the north of Myanmar. Because of the plenty of neem trees found in the town, Monywa is called Neem City. The name translates to Miss Pancake town, the legend being that the prince met a woman here who fried pancakes.
