Feb 6, 2020 · Overall, I believe the scarf is much more likely an indication of Mikasa's death than Eren's. The reasoning behind my belief is that the scarf wouldn't be much related to Mikasa killing Eren. She could kill him with or without the scarf and it shouldn't be any issue.

Aug 1, 2023 · While these are both logical and likely intentional artistic choices, I would like to think that the darkened scarf is also a reference to manga Mikasa, which we know canonically has a black scarf. And of course, we know that she creates another reality again. Basically manga Mikasa has a godlike power from the founding vow (see video above).

Mikasa holding onto the scarf is symbolic of Mikasa remembering Eren, and keeping him in her heart even after she moves on and gets married. Mikasa's future husband is obviously important to her, but Eren fundamentally changed her life. For him to ask her to forget about him is the exact opposite of what Mikasa would want.
