Grand Trunk Western No. 4070 is an preserved S-3-a class 2-8-2 USRA Light Mikado steam locomotive, and it was originally built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in December 1918 for the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR) as No. 474.

4070 was built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in Schenectady, New York in 1918 and went into service for the Grand Trunk Western Railroad in western Michigan. It was originally numbered 474.

The former Grand Truck Western 1918 USRA light Mikado (2-8-2) steam locomotive that was featured in the movie “The Natural” starring Robert Redford is currently undergoing restoration. The locomotive may be remembered as the one that ran originally on The Cuyahoga Valley Line as well as at Conneaut Lake Park.

USRA designed GTW Light Mikado 4070 is being restored by the Midwest Railway Preservation Society. Work is underway to restore the wheel drop pit back to operating order allowing us to drop the main driver for access to frame repair.

May 21, 2018 · Such is the case with me and former Grand Trunk Western 2-8-2 No. 4070. I’ve seen numerous photographs and videos of the light Mikado, which is best known in Northeast Ohio for having operated on the Cuyahoga Valley Line (now known as the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad) between 1975 and 1990.

The 4070 is the only Light Mikado equipped with a “coffin style” feed water heater. A total of 625 USRA Light Mikado Locomotives were built under USRA control. An additional 641 Light Mikado types were built after USRA control ended in 1920.
