May 22, 2023 · Mark "Mick" Murtha passed into the arms of our loving Jesus surrounded by his family on May 14th, 2023. Mick is survived by his wife of 54 years, Diana and his daughter Jenny and son Brian.

During spring practice, quarterback Mick Murtha advised Head Coach Bob Deming that personal problems precluded him using his final year of football eligibility with the Bulls. Murtha was a starter as a sophomore and held the job throughout his junior year.

A two-sport athlete from 1990-94 in football and wrestling, Mike Murtha is one of just 12 three-time All-Americans in program history as a grappler. Murtha also played an integral role on the 1994 national championship wrestling team and was a running back for the 1991 national championship football program.

Individuals stars included quarterback Mick Murtha, receiver Dick Ashley, fullback Lee Jones and safety Tom Hurd. The passing – combination of quarterback Mick Murtha and split end Dick Ashley helped to rewrite several Bulls’ aerial records.

Kirk Barton, who replaced Mick Murtha at quarterback, was mostly ineffective and threw only one touchdown pass the entire season. The televised Holy Cross game on the afternoon of October 31, 1970 received the most attention; but not for the actual football game.

The first time the Bulls had the ball, Mick Murtha directed a scoring drive which covered 53 yards in eight plays. The junior signal caller adeptly mixed a series of trap plays and roll out options which moved the Bulls on the ground, and he also proved to the home fans that the bursitus in his passing arm was arrested, as he threw on this ...
