Jan 30, 2012 · Mesabi Nugget was Minnesota’s first plant to turn iron ore concentrate recovered from old mine sites into iron nuggets. These nuggets are used to enhance scrap metal in electric art “mini-mill” steel mills. The Mesabi Nugget plant opened in 2009 and closed in January 2015 due to market factors.

Mesabi Nugget is proposing to reactivate the former LTV taconite mine as well as construct a new crusher and concentrating plant near Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota.

May 27, 2015 · This week, Indiana-based Steel Dynamics announced the indefinite idling of its Minnesota properties, including Mesabi Nugget in Hoyt Lakes and Mining Resources near Chisholm, a scram mining operation that produced iron concentrate used by Mesabi Nugget.

The Mesabi Iron Range is a mining district and mountain range in northeastern Minnesota following an elongate trend containing large deposits of iron ore. It is the largest of four major iron ranges in the region collectively known as the Iron Range of Minnesota.

Nov 17, 2006 · HOYT LAKES — The $215 million Mesabi Nugget project in Hoyt Lakes was abandoned Friday, according to Sen. Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook. The announcement by Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. that it was put on hold was greeted with outrage by the local mayor and heartbreak by legislators who worked to make it happen — and it was expected to happen this year.

Nov 5, 2024 · The Mesabi Nugget facility will be the first iron full-scale iron nugget plant to be built. The raw materials for the process will consist of various coals, fluxes, and binders, as well as iron ore concentrate from Silver Bay, Minnesota.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in co-operation with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will prepare a joint state-federal Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Mesabi Nugget Phase II Project (project) to be undertaken by Mesabi Mining, LLC and Steel Dynamics, Inc.

The project (hereinafter “the Project) is called Mesabi Nugget Phase II. The proposed project will reactivate portions of the former Erie Mining/LTVSMC mine near Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. Proposed actions include dewatering of existing mine pits in the area to be followed by open pit-type mining operations to remove ore and overburden, or waste rock.

In March of 2008 Hammerlund Inc. embarked on possibly its largest endeavor to date. The project at Mesabi Nugget consisted of approximately 65,000 cubic yards of concrete placed over the course of 1.5 years along with approximately 9,000,000 pounds of rebar to hold it together.

Nov 20, 2006 · Mesabi Nugget tested the promising new technology to produce a high iron nugget in Minnesota. Similar in size to taconite pellets, nuggets will have a much higher iron content.
