Here are some of the birds we have spotted along Merri Creek at our quarterly Merri BirdWatch. We visit a number of sites along the creek, so it's a great opportunity to find out more about our local birdlife, and explore the parklands.

Bird surveys by the Friends of Merri Creek have indicated native species of birds are declining as a result of the Ibis population. Particularly affected are aquatic species such as Pacific Black Ducks and Black Swans which have reduced dramatically.

Merri BirdWatch. Joining in a bird survey on the Merri Creek is a great way to find out about our fascinating local birds. It's also an enjoyable get-together, with some gentle exercise.

A range of creatures call the Merri Creek corridor home – from blue banded bees, to water rats to rock wallabies. Much of our work is about supporting the biodiversity that will allow these populations to survive and grow including two endangered species – the Golden Sun Moth and the Growling Grass Frog.

Things improved as we watched and recorded Pacific Black and Australian Wood Ducks, Chestnut Teal and a lone Hardhead. Other waterbirds included Little Pied and Little Black Cormorants. Then on the weir we found a female Australasian Darter not far from a Black Swan on a nest which had incorporated lots of plastic litter.
