Sep 26, 2023 · The current government policies regarding prisons in Mauritius play a crucial role in shaping the country’s correctional landscape and have a direct impact on the prison population. These policies reflect the nation’s approach to crime prevention, punishment, and rehabilitation.

It consists of the number of pre-trial/remand prisoners in the prison population on a single date in the year (or the annual average) and the percentage of the total prison population that pre-trial/remand prisoners constituted on that day.

The Central Prison is situated in Beau Bassin. The prison is restricted for adult male and is the most important one, as it accommodates the largest number of detainees. It is a maximum security prison which came into operation on the 1st May 1887.

14.5.1 The Mauritius Prison Service (MPS) envisions a safer Mauritius through best correctional practices. It is mandated to serve society by keeping detainees in safe, humane custody and help prepare them for a useful life.
