Math rock can be very angular and include pretty dissonant sections. Again, casual music fans are used to pretty consonant harmonically simple songs. I’m not shitting on pop music. There’s a lot of good pop. But the very defining features of math rock as a meta-genre will keep it from being a mainstream genre. And that’s okay.

The “math” part refers to odd time signatures. The whole song is tappy taps, but stays in 4/4? Probably not math rock. There’s no tappy taps but the main riff is a measure of 7/8 followed by a measure of 4/4 and then back to 7/8? Probably math rock. The whole song is tappy taps and changing time signatures? Undoubtably math rock.
