Mu Xin is the first, among 20th century Chinese artist, to have artwork collected by the British Museum. The paintings of Mu Xin are primarily landscape paintings. Mu Xin creatively incorporated the techniques of traditional Chinese paintings and Western paintings.

Mu Xin stands apart from his contemporaries in that he looked beyond the mere style of Western modernity and instead incorporated the morality and values of Renaissance humanism within himself.

The first major exhibition of works by the contemporary Chinese writer-artist Mu Xin featured works created while the artist was imprisoned during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) and its immediate aftermath.

Mu Xin (1927-2011), born in Wuzhen, China, he enjoyed painting, writing, playing the piano, and composing music from a young age. He began writing poems at the age of 12, and when he was 16, he published his first essay in a local newspaper.

What we show here include calligraphy, sketches, medium-sized color ink paintings and small-sized landscape paintings, also presented are his tools, brushes, ink-slab, manuscripts on his ideas about art and life, about memories of his masters and friends.

More than thirty types of publications by Mu Xin have been published on both sides of the Taiwan Strait during his lifetime including proses, novels, essays, haikus and poems. In total, these exceed several million words, he has also left more than forty of his manuscripts.
