The City of Malad is the Oneida County seat and is well recognized for its rich heritage and tradition. The city is nestled snugly on the east side of the Malad Valley – thirteen miles from the Utah/Idaho border along Interstate 15.

Malad City lies in a small valley in southeastern Idaho. Its name comes from the Malad River that begins in the northwestern end of the valley and was named “Malade” by early trappers who became sick from eating the beaver from that river.

Malad City was founded in 1864, but it was not incorporated as a city of the State of Idaho until 1941 with Dr. O.H. Mabey as the first mayor. Malad City has a mayor/council form of government, where the mayor is elected as the chief executive and council members are elected as the law-making arm of the local government.

Our focus at Malad City has been on the Wastewater Treatment Plant for so long, it seems strange that we can say that, finally, it is complete – well almost complete! We have some aerators that need to be replaced, but it has been running through 2024, and all is working well.

Malad City has a variety of services available for residents and visitors. It is the top lottery seller in the State of Idaho. There are five convenience stores, four gas stations, one grocery store, one drug and variety store, several flower shops and craft shops, three restaurants, outdoor barbecue dining, one independent Drive-In restaurant ...

Malad has two arts councils that provide local plays throughout the year, and the Malad Valley Heritage Square holds several fun events, including the Renaissance Faire and an annual Pumpkin Walk. View Our Event Calendar

The Malad City Planning & Zoning Commission has been working for the past year on revising the Malad City Zoning Ordinance. Every five years we look at the ordinance to provide updates. It’s a huge job, and we appreciate the time spent by this group of volunteers to go through each page.
