One of the technological innovations of the battle, the eight Sherman M4A3R3 medium tanks equipped with flamethrowers ("Ronson" or "Zippo" tanks), proved very effective at clearing Japanese positions.

The M4A3R3 "Zippo" was a Sherman tank variant, equipped with a flamethrower and commonly used in attacks against fortifications or confined spaces. The M4A3R3 "Zippo" was used in the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945 and proved very effective at clearing Japanese defensive positions.

These tanks had internal tanks providing only a few brief jets (of less than 5 seconds) and therefore towed most of the flammable liquid in wheeled armored tankers ... very visible to the enemy who made them priority targets.

The tank is an M4A3R3 Sherman "Zippo" flame tank belonging to the Army's 713th Tank Battalion, Armored Flamethrower Provisional. The 713th was the only armored flamethrower unit in the entire U.S. Army and fought exclusively on Okinawa.
