On 3 August 1944, the Ordnance Department directed that Shermans installed with the spaced suspension have "E9" added to their designations. Although we can't say that we have ever seen that in an official document, we will use "E9" in this piece for convenience.

First it was used by the U.S. Army for training, then rebuilt in Evansville by Chrysler and eventually given to the Royal Dutch Army under MDAP.

F irst off, Americans referred to the Sherman as the M4, or M4 Medium, or Medium, the Sherman name was not commonly used until post-WWII. The British came up with the name for the M4 and referred to it with their own designation system that is covered in more detail later.
