The M4 carbine (officially Carbine, Caliber 5.56 mm, M4) is a 5.56×45mm NATO assault rifle developed in the United States during the 1980s. It is a shortened version of the M16A2 assault rifle.

Despite the shorter effective range and decreased lethality, as compared to the M16A2 or M16A4 rifle, by 2015 the M4 / M4A1 carbine became the primary fighting rifle for US Army and US Marine Corps Infantry units.

The M4-series Carbine achieves over 80% commonality with the M16A2 Rifle and replaces all M3 .45 caliber submachine guns, and selected M9 pistols and M16 rifles.
