Diamonds have a long history as beautiful objects of desire. In the first century AD, the Roman naturalist Pliny stated: “Diamond is the most valuable, not only of precious stones, but of all things in this world.” A diamond has to go through a lot before it reaches the jeweler’s display case.

In Greek mythology, diamonds were linked to Zeus, who transformed children into adamastos, a symbol of divine purity.

In December of 1865, Erasmus Jacobs, the 15-year-old son of a farmer found a pretty stone and took it to his home near Colesberg, South Africa. The stone was given to a friend of the family, Schalk Van Neikirk, who discovered it to be a 21-carat yellow diamond, named the Eureka.

Since their discovery around 2500BC, these precious gems have been at the heart of many myths and legends by cultures across the world, and been associated with virtues such as strength, wealth, power and love.

Almost every civilization has some kind of lore on the diamond. Every civilization's lore however, shares one theme- that the diamond symbolizes all forces necessary for a healthy society, and that it brings its wearer great strength.

Modern science and technology has removed the superstition and mystery of diamonds that dominated ancient lore. Yet, diamonds still hold a place of fascination in the modern mind. In the 1950s, the brilliant marketing campaign ‘Diamonds are forever’ made the diamond the ultimate symbol of engagement, which remains solid until today.

Diamonds were worn in ancient times to promote strength, invincibility and courage. Diamond is also the gemstone of love: when carried or worn, diamond is said to advance positive relations with the opposite sex, to conquer infertility and to ensure fidelity.
