The nagamaki (長巻, "long wrapping") is a type of traditionally made Japanese sword (nihontō) [1] [2] with an extra long handle, used by the samurai class of feudal Japan. [3]

The Elizabethan long sword (cf. George Silver [32] and Joseph Swetnam) is a single-handed "cut-and-thrust" sword with a 4 ft (1.2 m) blade [23] similar to the long rapier. "Let thy (long) Rapier or (long) Sword be foure foote at the least, and thy dagger two foote."

The unique feature of the Nagamaki sword was the extra-long handle which was usually as long as the blade itself. This made it perfect for two-handed usage where the right hand was always closer to the blade than the left.

The only name I've seen it called is zhanmajian, 斬馬劍, "chop horse sword", after a name used for similar Han Dynasty swords (large two-handed jian (double-edged swords), but with sword-sized handles, not polearm-sized handles).
