Here is a way to make an inferior but working shim using only a can and your hands. DISCLAIMER: Obviously only do this with your own locks or for others you know have rightful access to what you are opening yet somehow managed to get locked out.

All you do is slide the padlock shim down the shaft of the bolt (where the notches in the bolt aren't), then twist. The latch that latches the bolt to the rest of the lock keeping it locked will give way, and the bolt will pop open because it is springloaded. Works great on Masterlocks.

Jun 12, 2005 · I've only done it a couple of times, just playing around for curiosity -- so I may have just been lucky with the locks I had -- but I was able to do the pop-can shim trick pretty easily on the couple of Master combo locks I tried it on.

These shim lock picks are great for both combination padlocks as well as key operated padlocks. Shim lock picks are used by simply inserting the shim next to the lock shank and then rotating the shim which depresses the latch. These shims are thin enough to slip into the most padlocks.
