Limestone is a sedimentary rock, composed mostly of the skeletal fragments of marine organisms, such as coral and mollusks.

The very scenic Chippewa trail ascends the rocky summit of Black Mountain in 1.8 miles. The trailhead, which accommodates three or four cars, and beginning section of trail are on private land. The historic Lime Kilns diverge left from the trail on an old road and are well worth a visit.

May 9, 2022 · Benton, NH off Lime Kiln Rd, a short walk up the Chippewa trail. Follow that trail for a steep 1.5 miles more and you’ll get to the peak of Black Mountain with its gorgeous views too! Apr 29, 2018 · Usually lime kilns were built near the coast because you needed to transport tons of limestone and coal or other fuel to keep them going. I guess there must have been limestone and plenty of wood (naturally) nearby.
