While many studies of the duckweeds describe ways to induce flowering in the laboratory, there are only two reports of seed production in the laboratory. This is important as the production of seed underlies establishment of breeding protocols to improve agricultural traits.

The duckweeds (genus Lemna) and related genera of the duckweed family (Lemnaceae) are the smallest flowering plants known. Individual plants consist of a single, flat oval leaf (technically a modified stem) no more than ¼ of an inch long that floats on the surface of still-moving ponds, lakes, and sloughs.

Duckweeds, or water lens, are flowering aquatic plants which float on or just beneath the surface of still or slow-moving bodies of fresh water and wetlands. Also known as "bayroot," they arose from within the arum or aroid family (Araceae), and therefore, often are classified as the subfamily Lemnoideae within the Araceae.

Among the smallest of the flowering plants, Lemna minor (Common Duckweed) is a free-floating, aquatic perennial forming a carpet of tiny, oval-rounded, bright green leaves. Each plant consists of a single flat leaf with a single hanging rootlet. Tiny white flowers are rarely produced.
