Oiling afterwards just gives the leather a bit more softness and pliability . . . at least that has been my overall experience in 20 years. Wet leather has always given me bad dye resullts . . .

I write down exactly what I did to get what color on what item, and with what leather. Every hide of leather is different, so you should always want to try out whatever you're doing on a small piece first.

There is a compressed air sprayer from Preval that attaches to a 6 ounce glass dye bottle. I bought mine from Home Depot for about $5.00. They work okay with alcohol based dyes like we use in leather work.

Apr 7, 2012 · The oil dyes are NOT oil based - see the MSDS - they are an "improved" version of the standard spirit dyes per Fiebings. FWIW - any type of spirit based dye (many if not most contain not only alcohol, but toluene, acetone, xylene, and other toxic chemicals.)
