Kiku, honorifically called O-Kiku (お菊), is a character in the FX limited series, Shōgun, who is portrayed by Yuka Kouri. The most deft and renowned courtesan in Izu, Kiku is accomplished and skilled in ways known to the select few men who can afford her.

Shōgun (Japanese: 将軍, pronounced [ɕoːɡɯɴ] ⓘ) is an American historical drama television series created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks. It is based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell, which was previously adapted into a 1980 miniseries.

The most deft and renowned courtesan in Izu, Kiku is young, beautiful and most of all perceptive. Able to read her clients with a practiced ease, she brings an elevated artistry to her work. A close apprentice of Gin, she sees the world for not what it is, but what it could be.

Here we see something similar take place with Mariko as the translator but rather than the translator’s voice fading out, Kiku’s voice is sidelined for us to see a direct and intimate conversation between the two.
