Khizr Khan (reigned 28 May 1414 – 20 May 1421) was the founder of the Sayyid dynasty, the fourth ruling dynasty of the Delhi sultanate, in northern India soon after the invasion of Timur and the fall of the Tughlaq dynasty. [1]

Appointed by Timur as the governor of Delhi, Khizr Khan managed to establish his authority amidst a weakened Delhi Sultanate. Despite facing continuous challenges, such as local revolts and fragmented control, his reign marked an effort to restore order.

Khizr Khan was originally a noble in the Delhi Sultanate during the Tughlaq Dynasty and was the governor of Multan under Sultan Firuz Shah. He was expelled from the city by the Muin tribes under Sarang Khan who occupied Multan in 1395, [16] [17] an Indian Muslim and the brother of Mallu Iqbal Khan, who was the de-facto ruler of Delhi.

Soon following Timur's invasion and the collapse of the Tughlaq dynasty in northern India, Khizr Khan founded the Sayyid dynasty, which later became the governing lineage of the Delhi Sultanate. Firuz Shah Tughlaq appointed Khizr Khan as governor of Multan, and he was a renowned administrator.

Khizr Khan served as the viceroy of Multan under Sultan Firuz Shah and was initially a noble in the Delhi Sultanate under the Tughlaq Dynasty. One of the most significant Indian lords to take part in Timur's invasion and defy Delhi's rule was Khizr Khan.
