The Kankakee, Beaverville & Southern Railroad (KBSR) was formed in 1977 to operate a 25 mile segment of former New York Central trackage between Sheldon and Kankakee, Illinois. As the larger connecting railroads continued their efforts to downsize, KBSR continued to grow, reaching 155 miles by 1995.

The Kankakee, Beaverville, and Southern was founded in 1977, when Fey Orr bought up 25 miles of trackage from Conrail that was set to be abandoned. In 1981, 80 more miles of ex-New York Central and Milwaukee Road trackage was bought. In 1991, KBSR bought more track set to be abandoned, totaling up to its current length of 155 miles of track.
