Jun 9, 2016 · This ‘Kpan Pre’ mask represents a young girl. It features, in most cases with two horns, in the dance cycle in honour of the buffalo god ‘Goli’. In central Ivory Coast, among the Baule people, the Goli dances are performed as part of the funeral ceremonies for important men.

The two types of masks are ‘ kpan ’, with humanlike features, and ‘ kple kple ’, which are used in times of danger and for funerals.

Dec 12, 2021 · The dance is performed with various styles of masks, up to four, with different symbolism. The first one we saw was the “kpan,” the human-faced mask, while the second was the “glen” mask, representing a mythical cross between an antelope and a crocodile.

Kplekple masks, representing junior males, are simple, flat, round and horned. Goli Glin masks, for senior males, are aggressively complex and very sculptural. Kpan pre masks, for junior females, are graceful and horned, Kpan masks, for senior females, represent idealized women of beauty and wisdom. All were danced by men.

"In the Baule version of the Goli dance, four pairs of masks appear two by two in a fixed order: first a pair of disc-faced masks (usually called Kple Kple), next a pair of animal helmet masks (Goli Glen), third a pair of horned face masks (Kpan Pre), and finally two human-faced masks with crested hairdos (Kpan).

Jun 9, 2016 · A perfect and skilfully crafted Baule ‘Kpan-Pre mask’ with only small, age-related damage (a minimal fracture under the left cheek and on the lower right ear).

Kpan represents the senior female among the characters performing in Goli. The Kpan character can be recognized by its elaborate crested coiffure. This mask with serrated border along the bottom of the face shows characteristics of artistic style of the neighboring Yaure.

Most of these masks are Kpan, with elaborate coiffures and refined carving, and represent the Senior female in the ceremonies. Another mask, Kplekple, shown in the lower right, represents the junior male.
