John Dollond FRS (21 June [O.S. 10 June] 1706 – 30 November 1761) [1] was an English optician, known for his successful optics business and his patenting and commercialization of achromatic doublets.

John Dollond was a British maker of optical and astronomical instruments who developed an achromatic (non-colour-distorting) refracting telescope and a practical heliometer, a telescope that used a divided lens to measure the Sun’s diameter and the angles between celestial bodies.

John Dollond FRS (1706-1761) was an English optician. 1706 June 10th. Born the son of a Huguenot refugee, a silk-weaver at Spitalfields, London. He followed his father's trade, but found time to acquire a knowledge of Latin, Greek, mathematics, physics, anatomy and other subjects.
