Jim Barnes was an English golfer who lived most of his life in the United States, where he was one of the best pro golfers of the first quarter of the 1900s. He won big tournaments from the mid-1910s until the late 1930s. Along the way, Barnes won four major championships, including the PGA Championship the first two times it was played.

"Long" Jim Barnes, the former head PGA professional at Essex County Country Club in West Orange, has long been one of golf's most engaging characters, not only for his nickname but for his penchant for winning.

He won the first two PGA Championships in 1916 and 1919, and then led from start to finish to win the 1921 U.S Open by nine strokes from Walter Hagen and Fred McLeod. President Warren G Harding presented the trophy, making Barnes the only winner to receive the trophy from a sitting U.S president.

Feb 20, 2019 · Thanks to a fourth-round collapse by third-round leader Macdonald Smith, Barnes emerged with the Claret Jug and the title of Champion Golfer of the Year. Barnes’ final round of 72 helped him overcome the five-shot deficit during the last round. The only missing part of Barnes’ golf resume is an appearance in the Ryder Cup.
