Ordained an evangelist by the Presbytery of Philadelphia in the fall of 1759, he was later installed as pastor of the Deep Run church in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1761.

James Latta was born in Ireland on August 31, 1755 to Robert and Jane Latta. He and his first wife, Elizabeth Houston (birth date unknown; d. ca. 1792), had two sons, William (1781-1829) and Robert (1783-1852). James immigrated to the United States in 1785, apparently in order to settle his father’s estate in Rowan County, N.C.

Built in 1800, Latta Place was owned by James Latta, an immigrant from Northern Ireland. A successful traveling merchant through 1820, Mr. Latta then retired and turned his property into a cotton plantation consisting of 742 acres and 34 enslaved people.
