The Domain Name System (DNS) allows a computer presented with a textual name to convert or map it to the numeric IP address of another computer with which it needs to communicate, say to fetch a web page or deliver an e-mail. The process is called DNS resolution.

The Primary Nameserver Service provides high availability primary and secondary nameservers that satisfy DNS queries for the zone data they hold. They are geographically separated as a precaution against the event of fire or the failure of network connection, and all are situated on the Janet backbone.

DNS resolving is an internal service and ideally your network will have a part set aside for internal servers such as domain controllers and fileservers. An existing domain controller is particularly suitable.

This service supports your primary nameservers. We recommend that you run your primary nameserver within your organisation, and use a secondary nameserver off-site to increase the resilience of your DNS.
