So, who gets hip apophysitis, and what do we do about teenage hip pain? What is traction apophysitis or growth plate injury?

Iliac apophysitis (uh-paa-fuh-sai-tuhs) is pain and swelling (inflammation) of the growth plate along the side of the hip (iliac crest). The growth plate is an area of weakness, and injury to it occurs because of repeated stress or forceful exercise.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a more sensitive test to detect iliac crest apophysitis. Although the MRI findings of apophysitis can be variable, the initial findings include low signal intensity on T1-weighted sequences with increased signal intensity in fluid-sequences, bone marrow edema, and mild enlargement of the physis [4].

The apophyses most commonly affected are the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS), the anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS), and the iliac crest. The muscles that attach to these apophyses flex the hip and rotate and twist the pelvis and trunk.
