The EMD SW7 was a diesel switcher locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between October 1949 and January 1951. [2] It was powered by a 1,200 horsepower (895 kW)12-567A engine. [1] The SW7 replaced the earlier 1,000 horsepower NW2 switcher in EMD's catalog. [3] A total of 489 SW7 locomotives were produced.

Illinois Central (IC) No. 1407 was built as an SW7 type diesel switcher locomotive in August of 1950 by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors (EMD). Originally numbered 9411, the locomotive was used to switch cars in railyards all over the IC’s system spanning from Omaha, Nebraska to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Rebuilt from GMO 54 in 1972. Retired 1975. blt as NW2 9164, re# 1014. Sold to PAL, to PCSX, to RJC.

Dec 20, 2024 · ICG SW7 1215, Hawthorne Yard, Cicbro, Illinois, April 1981, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in October 1950 as IC SW7 9315 (c/n 11653) on EMD Order 4053, it was renumbered to ICG 1215, and during March 1982, it was rebuilt to SW14 1511.

The IC + GM&O merger saw several F3A / F7A locos conveyed to the new ICG and assigned a 1600 series number, but only 1610, 1615 and 1620 had them applied. They were also the only F-units to receive the full orange & white treatment.

IC SW7's 1212 and 1209, Hawthorne Yard, Cicero, Illinois, October 22, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1209 was built as #9309 in April 1950 (c/n 10041) on EMD Order 6008. It was renumbered to 1209, rebuilt to SW14 #1508 during 1982, stored unservicable October 15, 1992.
