The use of the intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) in cardiac surgery to support the heart is a well-established, standardized therapy. Most cardiac surgical units practice direct manual compression of the insertion site for post-IABP removal hemostasis.

• Wean IABP per Provider order as follows: Place IABP on 1:2 and 1:3 prior to discontinuing to ensure patient tolerance. Place on 1:1 and turn off anticoagulation before IABP is pulled.
