Honda called the system 4WD, but it doesn't have a locking differential, so it's more like AWD, but also not really. If the Element is listed as 4WD, it will run in front wheel drive mode unless the front starts spinning faster than the rear.

I'm not a mechanic but already modified a Honda Element 2WD with an X-WAV concept. The reason to remove the driveshaft is because it gets in the way to lower the floor.

Jan 16, 2003 · the 4wd 2wd and the 4cyl 6cyl issue is something honda gets hounded on often.. that was an issue with the CRV and though it has a 4cyl it has more than enough pep and get up and go with out a gas hog 6 cyl!
