Known as General Lyman Field prior to 1989, Hilo International Airport occupies 1,391 acres about two miles east of Hilo, on the eastern shore of the island of Hawaii. The airport’s primary runway (8-26) is 9,800 feet long and is used principally for air carrier operations.

Hilo International Airport offers a Visitor Information Program to assist travelers. The program is staffed from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. Service counters are located throughout the terminal to assist the traveling public.

The airport was designated ITO after one of the first Hawaiian Airlines Hilo Airport station managers by the name of “Mr. Ito”. The airport was designated ITO because both ILO (Mandurriao Airport in Iloilo,Philippines) and HIL (Shillavo Airport in Ethiopia) were already taken.
