Use the UB-04 Data Specifications Manual and the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting to facilitate the assignment of the POA indicator for each "principal" diagnosis and "other" diagnoses codes reported on claim forms UB-04 and 837 Institutional.
The predetermined list of diagnosis codes that DSS considers to be a HCAC, if there was no indication that the condition was present on admission, will not be considered when assigning the APR DRG for the claim.

They occur during a hospital stay (are not present at the time of admission) and can reasonably be prevented through the application of appropriate evidence-based protocols.
The HAC 14 Iatrogenic Pneumothorax with Venous Catheterization ICD-10-PCS procedure code list has been updated effective FY 2017 to reflect this coding advice.
