Western Grebes are crisp black and white, with a sharp transition between black and white extending down the neck. The head and most of the face are black, with white below the eye. The bill is yellowish or greenish yellow and the eye is red at close range.

Pied-billed Grebes are small, chunky swimming birds. They have compact bodies and slender necks, with relatively large, blocky heads and short, thick bills. They have virtually no tail. Smaller than an American Coot; about the size of a Green-winged Teal. These are brown birds, slightly darker above and more tawny-brown on the underparts.

There are seven types of grebes found in North America. The Horned Grebe and Pied-billed Grebe have the widest ranges. These birds are more likely to be seen from the central parts of the continent into the more western regions.

Horned Grebes of North America (subspecies cornutus) are paler above than the Old World subspecies, often called "Slavonian Grebe" (auritus).
