Grassy Cove is an enclosed valley in Cumberland County, Tennessee, United States. The valley is notable for its karst formations, which have been designated a National Natural Landmark. Grassy Cove is also home to a small unincorporated community.

It is said to be the largest sinkhole in North America at eight miles long and three miles wide. It is so large it can be seen from outer space.

Covering about five square miles, Grassy Cove is a beautiful valley ringed by mountains like Brady, Black and Bear Den. Known for it’s karst topography, created when water dissolves rocks like limestone, the area is filled with caves and underground streams, fragile ecosystems vulnerable to pollution.

The Karst Forest at Grassy Cove is located on the South end of Grassy Cove framing this nationally-significant Tennessee natural treasure. Wildflowers adorn the steep slopes in springtime and the trees blaze in the fall.

A spur trail to the south between Gateway Rock and the trail head kiosk takes hikers to a spectacular overlook of Grassy Cove. On a good day visitors can see Mount Le Conte in the Smoky Mountains – about 72 miles distant.

It’s truly a caver’s cave. The entrance to Run To The Mill is the Grassy Cove area of Tennessee and is located in a large sinkhole with an inflowing wet weather stream. After entering the cave, you maneuver through some tight passage before emerging into walking passage.
